Knots Lab

Today we did a problem solving lab. Reflect and comment on the concepts it reinforced and whether a hands on type class helped reinforce your understanding.

  1. Today the lab we did with the string length averaging did indeed help me with the concepts that we were reviewing. It helped review the basic equations and graphing skills that were learned as early as Alg. 1. Figuring out how to plug in a knot length into a y=mx+b problem helped me work out the difficulties I would have faced otherwise. If we could somehow apply a lab to other concepts that we will be learning it'd help a great deal in reinforcing the skills.

  2. The lab today helped me to remember how to use y=mx+b and graphing to figure out lab results and analyze them. It didn't really help me understand any more than a regular worksheet would have, if not less than a worksheet.

  3. In the lab today we used y=mx+b with graphing points on a line graph. This helped me remember how to use the equation.

  4. During in that Lab, we had to use the strings and measure how much the knot decreases each time. Every time for me and my parnter, it decreases 4. Also, this lab has reminded me of Last year and freshman year Algebra because we used alot of y=mxtb slope functions. This lab has helped me remember the slope formula because it refresh my memory with the slopes. Also, it has helped me alot because it made me understand it better. The reason why it made me understand it better because i had to find the slope of the string every time i add a knot onto the string.

  5. The lab really helped me remember the y=mx+b function and what m and b are. I also concentrated more on the questions and used other ways to figure out the answer than normally because I could actually do something.

  7. I definitely think the hands on lab helped me get a better understanding of what "m" and "b" really were. I think more labs like this will help us understand other concepts of math. It makes it more fun than learning out of the book.

  8. The lab really helped reinforce my graphing skills using the y=mx+b function, because I was able to see everything that was happening at my fingertips. It was different from how I usually solve problems in math classes.

  9. The hands on lab was very helpful to learning the concepts because it’s a little different than just adding the numbers. When we did the lab we got to see the math in more than one way, using a graph, a table, an equation, or a model. It was also helpful for reviewing y=mx+b.

  10. The string length lab was very interesting becuase it both proved how y=mx+b could apply to real life situations, but also showed that this patter is impractical, as having a negative length of string is impossible no matter how many knots you tie in it. I think that more labs like this would help make the class more interesting and less the same thing everyday

  11. the string lab was fun and a good way to review the linear equation mx+b and howyou can use it for multiple things. I liked working hands on and i think we should do it more often

  12. The knot lab helped me understand the concpets better with a hands on activity which i liked. Also it showed me how I can use the equation y=mx+b on different types of problems

  13. The lab helped me remeber to use the y=mx+b formula. I thought doing the hands on lab was a good way to apply what we knew. I think we should do labs like these more often.

  14. I liked the hands on learning because it made the purpose of the lab alot easier to understand. I could see where the numbers were coming from and how the y=mx+b formula came into play. I think we should do labs like this one more often

  15. I like doing labs because they help me to remember the concept much better because I am actually doing the work and not just watching a teacher and taking notes. This lab also helped me review y=mx+b formula and how it fits into everyday concepts instead of just plugging numbers into an equation.

  16. This lab was an excellent resource of showing us ( students ) what the values of m,x,and b really are in real life applications. It also helped show negative association; when you INCREASE the number of knots in a string the string DECREASES in length
